  • Review:

Color Me Rich by Mohan Deep is the story of a struggling artist named Akash Saigal. Akash lives in a small 400 sq ft room in one of the small lanes of Adarsh Nagar. Although he has a lot of work painted, he barely manages to earn bread and butter for the daily meals, let alone pay the house rent. He first meets Suma, an aspiring singer, while trying to rescue her from being molested by her own father. She feels connected to him and soon enough loses her heart to him. Akash, as naive as he is, considers her only as best friend and even agrees to do a copy canvas — forge a painting for money to be able to pay for the angioplasty of Suma’s mother.

At one of the exhibitions, Zenobia, a page 3 celebrity and an artist herself, buys Akash’s painting and they soon become fast friends. It is not long until they both fall in love with each other. Before Suma could take a step to take her relationship with Akash to the next level, he breaks the news of his marriage to Zenobia. Suma is hreat-broken but puts in all her negative energy in working hard for her music albums. She soon becomes a famous ghazal singer while Akash soars the skies with his success stories. He auctions all of his paintings as a collection of varied themes and sells each of his paintings in lakhs.

Soon enough, the love between Akash and Zenobia dies as a result of Zenobia’s insecurity of losing fame to Akash’s soaring success and even doubts Akash of having an extra-marital affair with Suma. During one such confrontation, the truth behind Zenobia’s weird behavior is revealed and that also turns out to be Zenobia’s last day on earth. The mystery of her suicide or death?! gets Akash arrested and a year later given a clean chit. However, turns out that the reporting officer of this case gets his hands on a piece of information which would re-open the case. An interesting afternoon read!

  • Let-downs:

I somehow felt that the character of Suma was not given full justice. Mohan could have played around a bit with the story-line and brought along a new aspect to the otherwise common life-story a celebrity. Suma could have been the life of the story after Zenobia’s death but I didn’t see that coming. The story could have been more powerful had this aspect been taken care of.

  • Appreciations:

Words are powerful enough to bring characters to life – living and breathing right in front of your eyes. Mohan’s descriptive power is the strength of his narration. He brought characters to life and even the incidence plots. Transitions from one plot to the other was very smooth and helped in free-flowing of the script. Perfect editing, detailed narration style and flawless descriptions hooked me to the book till the very end.

  • Verdict:

A light and quick interesting sneak peak into the world of glamour (3.5/5)

  1. Your verdict is, “A light and quick interesting sneak peak into the world of glamour.” But the book revolves around the art scene.

    1. Hi Sushma,
Thanks for taking time to read my review 🙂
The book features a painter who, on a wider perspective, is only a representative of the many celebrities who go through a similar series of events in their lives.
