He looked at his mobile it was Aishwarya or Asu aspopularly known among friends.
Ronit turned his face towards the wall clock. He was surprised to get a call from Asu at this late hour. He answered the call with a puzzled voice-There was no sound from the other end.
Hello Asu, Is it you? Ronit asked.
The silence got replaced by a shrill crying sound.
Ronit (even more puzzled) – Are you ok Asu? What’s
wrong? Why was Asu crying? And why would she call Ronit at such a late hour?

  • Review-

Hottest Summer Night by Rony Dasgupta is a short simple story about Ronit, the protagonist, and Aishwarya aka Asu. They are school friends and share almost everything with each other. The story is about complications in their individual lives and how it affects their relation with each other. The author has beautifully depicted short incidences from school times which shaped their lives and also their friendship. Asu is married to one of their classmates and Ronit is still single. They start talking over social media, which leads to SMS and then long conversations over phone calls. They become best friends and the story then revolves around how important their presence is in each other’s lives, how they cope up with their individual problems, and how they support each other throughout.

  • Appreciations:
The narration of incidences was short and crisp. The author beautifully depicted the varied emotions. Very relative situations are included which binds the reader to the story.
  • Let-downs:
The story sometimes lost track in between, leaving gaps in the narration. It was difficult to understand the transitions and hence led to incomplete understanding of the story on the whole.
  • Verdict:

Short and simple story, good effort by the author. A nice read. (2.5/5)
