- Hello Himanshu! Welcome to the literary world 🙂
Thanks for this opportunity, Madhuri.
- Tell us something about your recently published book Island Game of Modern Life.
Island Game of Modern Life is a story about four dead people. They meet in Yamlok and they want to be alive again. Yamraj offers them playing one game called Island Game of Modern Life. The winner will be resurrected and will be allowed to start their life from where it had ended. In brief this is what this book is BUT it’s not just that. If there is a law to understand gravity, there must be something to understand life as well, and this book is an effort to explain modern life in a unique way- by playing a game based on our real life philosophies. Rest, let the readers find out.

- When did you start writing?
In my childhood, I was fond of writing poems. In my school days, I used to write suspense stories secretly to avoid any berating from my father and school teachers. In my college days, I worked as an associate magazine editor and then I realized that there is a deep connection between me and writing.
- What is the purpose of your writing?
It’s a long journey to define the purpose but one thing is sure that it’s beyond just publishing books. My intention is to communicate with people, to entertain them through my writing for goodness of their life, family and society.
- What inspired you to bring forth this idea of Island Game of Modern Life as a book?
Two things. First, when you watch a recorded match, you can highlight the mistakes and that gives a plan for improvement. Life is a LIVE game; nobody gets a chance to see it in a recorded way. That’s one idea that pushed me to do something like that.
Second, everyone wants to know: what is life and most of the time we try to find the answer on a spiritual platform. Eventually we lose the interest because we think that spiritual means- it’s not scientific and everything is about soul and GOD. But that’s not what it is. As I said that if there is a law to understand gravitation, there is also a law to understand our life and that’s another thought that made me design a game called Island Game of Modern Life.
- Is any part of Island Game of Modern Life inspired from real life?
If this book is a lemon and by chance it is squeezed till the last drop of juice, the drops are inspired by real life and rest are fiction. That’s what I can say.
- Do you see a movie based on Island Game of Modern Life being made?
Oh yes, it has great potential for being made into an eye opening movie for people. Also, I see Island Game of Modern Life as an animated game which can be played with great sense of interest and this is in progress.
- Wow! It would surely be a hit. After all, unlike regular novels, Island Game of Modern Life is a unique concept one.
Yes, I always wanted to do something different in life. Even in the field of writing I want to discover something that doesn’t exist. This book is just a small step toward my discovery.
- What is your idea of the perfect world?
A world where people don’t repent at their last breath of their life is a perfect world for me.
- Which of your works have been published so far?
This is my debut novel. Many of my articles are published in my college magazine and also in corporate magazines wherever I worked.
- So how was this journey of becoming a published author?
It wasn’t easy of course because of two things. First, I didn’t have any background or support for editing or writing in English so I learnt everything on my own, by doing it. Second, to manage time for reading, learning and writing wasn’t easy for me. After I finished my manuscript I sent it to many publishers and one of the renowned publishers accepted it but they gave me a deal to publish one year later. That didn’t excite me. And then I moved for self publishing and I can say that it was really a nice journey from the beginning till the end because you learn many things during the process of self publishing.
- Which approach is better according to you: traditional or self-publishing, and why?
Which type of marriage is better: LOVE or ARRANGE? And the answer will vary from person to person. Everything has their own pros and cons. Self publishing is like love marriage, you know each and everything before the book is published. Traditional publishing is like arrange marriage where you are not directly involved into the process. However it’s good to start with a platform where your work is valued and reviewed carefully.
- What should the beginners do today?
If you see around you will find thousands of writers, writing for something, they all want to become famous and rich and in my eyes there is nothing wrong in it. But the ultimate intention of writing shouldn’t be to become famous and rich because for me, writers own a deep sense of responsibility and they can do any wonders if they want to. So as a beginner, when I started writing, I thought of constructing a highway instead of a narrow lane. The message is simple: write for serving people in the long run.
- What is your take on book publishing as you see the current scenario?
In the digital world where social media is growing, taking your work to masses is easier now. Hence it is now becoming easier to promote your work and build your credibility.
- What are your forthcoming writings?
Currently I am writing my second novel. It’s about journey of an ordinary guy who goes to university in a fantasy world to learn the secrets and mysteries of extra-ordinary powers needed to become successful in life.
- Interesting!! What are the four top most things you take care of while writing a book?
- Concept
- Plot
- Characters
- Flow
- What is your favorite genre and why?
Philosophy and suspense because they excite me
- What / Who is your biggest source of inspiration in life?
The answer to what is Karmayoga from Bhagvad Gita and the answer to who is my father.
- What is the biggest challenge you have ever faced and how did you overcome it?
Writing in English was the biggest challenge for me. I never studied in English medium school and especially in villages of Bihar, the education is not provided with basic standards. I always feared while writing something in English. When I came to NIT Calicut, for a moment I froze from within and pictured myself standing alone in some island away from the world. I think getting into NIT Calicut is the best thing that happened to my life. I started writing whenever it was possible for me. My articles written in English were rejected everywhere but I never stopped. And then, I was in Netherland for a few months in an official trip. We had a team ice skating event and someone told me to write a few things about leadership learning from ice skating. They liked my article and next day it was in the magazine. I felt like I had come out of a rabbit hole.
- If you had to live a day of your life as one of the living or dead personality, who would it be and why?
Many have inspired me but I would love to live as myself.
- And finally, any message for the readers?
To the readers of my book- many hearty thanks, it means a lot to me. In general, don’t read the same type of book every time. And I have something for the readers – www.gamesbyhimanshu.com is my personal website where I post thoughtful ideas from time to time.
